Written by Grant As a follow- up to our earlier article on Ten Reasons to Get a Car History Report, we’re now going to walk you through the process of actually reading and understanding vehicle history reports. You’ll quickly learn how to spot the good, bad and the ugly, so that you can be one step closer to buying your used car. Different vehicle history services use different formats for their reports, but for the purposes of this article, we will be using Auto. Check. We already know what you’re asking: “Why Auto. Using the TIMKEN BEARING INTERCHANGE Check over CARFAX?” Well, CARFAX has a bigger name because of advertising, but Auto. Check is used by professionals, provides more detailed reports and also offers unlimited reports for 6. Considering that the average person pulls 1. If you click on the Auto. Check link, you can view a sample report on the bottom right hand side of the page. Before we start, we would like to give a big thanks out to Edie Hirtenstein, who is the Senior Product Manager at Auto. Check for her assistance on this article. Edie was kind enough to agree to an interview to help explain and answer questions we had about Auto. Check’s features and services. When running a vehicle history report, each car will have certain information that includes: VIN Number. Engine Type (Ex: 2. L I4 EFI)Year / Make / Model / Style (2. Toyota Camry / LE / 4. DR Sedan)Last Recorded Odometer Reading (Ex: 4. Age. Country of Origin / Manufacture (Ex: America, Japan)Calculated Vehicle Owners (Ex: 3 owners)When comparing the used car that you’re looking at against the vehicle’s history report, you want to make absolutely sure that the car’s description matches the official information. Some sellers might make an honest mistake and list their vehicle a year off, but less ethical types might “fudge” their car listing in the hopes you won’t pick up on it. Pay close attention to the calculated vehicle owners, because that is an important aspect when assessing the quality of a car. A car that has had many owners is not ideal because it’s harder to keep track of maintenance records with multiple owners, which is important to know. You don’t want to have a timing belt go out at 1. Also, there might be reason the car as changed hands so many times, such as a stuttering engine or intermittent electrical problem that doesn’t show up readily on a test drive. Auto. Check Vehicle Score. If you’re the type of person that bores easily by details or is daunted by the sheer amount of information involved in buying a used car, Auto. Check has made life easier. As a proprietary service, Auto. Check lists a vehicle score that rates each vehicle on an absolute score of 1 to 1. It takes into account various factors such as: age, vehicle class, number of owners, mileage, usage, title brand, mileage brand, accidents and other factors. In addition to the vehicle score, the report lists the scoring range of similar vehicles (based on year and style) as a comparison. Example: Auto. Check Score 5. Comparison Vehicle Score 3. The comparison score is useful, because age is the most important determinant in vehicle score. This means that the used car you’re looking at might have a seemingly low score because of it’s age, but may score better than vehicles of roughly the same age and model. In fact, the comparison represents the scoring range of the middle 5. Auto. Check formula. Reading the Full Vehicle History. The full vehicle history is the section that lists all recorded events with the car in chronological order. From being titled at the dealer lot to yearly tab renewals, every major event will (hopefully) be found in the history section. Because there are so many different types of events, we will list both the most common events along with those that you should keep an eye out for: Regular Events. Vehicle Manufactured and Shipped to Dealer: Indicates when a vehicle is essentially delivered to a dealer. If a vehicle does not have this event, then the vehicle may have been imported from outside the US or be a rebuilt vehicle. Title: Represents a change in vehicle ownership. Title (Loan/lien reported): Car was purchased with a loan. Title (Leased vehicle): Car was leased from the dealership. Title (Corrected Title): Generally indicates a paperwork error on owner of the car with the DMV. Registration Event/Renewal: Annual tab renewal. Be careful if you don’t see a renewal each year, as that indicates the car was likely broken, was in an unreported accident or had some unknown reason for not getting renewed. Note that older cars sometimes have missing data from earlier years, so make sure a vehicle has been renewed lately. Odometer reading from DMV: These events indicates the last official odometer reading from the DMV. Different state DMVs have different requirements on when odometer readings are mandatory, but most will report odometers during a title transfer. Note that cars older than 1. Passed Emission Inspection: You want to see these events, as that means the car passed mandatory emissions inspections. Cautionary Events. Reported at Auto Auction: Many cars go to auction for legitimate reasons: expired leases, unsold cars and fleet vehicles. That said, there area cars sold at auction include are in need of fixes or repairs. These vehicles are usually fixed by the time they go onto a dealer lot, but if you find that one of the last entry of the vehicle history report lists a car going to auction, you will definitely want to have the car inspected if considering a purchase (that said, our recommendation is you always get an inspection.)Fleet / Rental Fleet: Fleet and rental vehicles tend to get a bad reputation because there are many stories of people renting cars and abusing them. Certain companies also have horrendous maintenance policies and essentially do minimal work on a car before taking them out of the fleet. The other way to look at it is that most rental drivers are adults that have no interest in abusing the vehicle, while the good rental companies use a scheduled maintenance for their vehicles. To each their own on these type of vehicles. Repossessed: Indicates a car that was taken back from the owner for failure to pay. While a repossessed car in and itself is not a bad indicator (unless you’re superstitious), but what it can imply is that if the owner could not afford car payments, then there is a good chance they could not afford maintenance on the vehicle. Red Flag Events. Insurance Loss An insurance loss is a nice way of saying the car has been “totaled”. This can be caused by a stolen car that was recovered too late or a vehicle that had been in a major accident. Stolen cars often suffer significant abuse and are even used in crimes, which may not be the history you wish to associate with your vehicle. Accident vehicles that are totaled are extremely dangerous and probably are followed up with a salvage or rebuilt title if still on the road. Collision with Another Vehicle: Even though practically every driver eventually gets into an accident according to road statistics, you still want to avoid vehicles that have been in accidents. While most accident vehicles are fixed up and run fine, there may be unseen damage in the frame or other parts of the car that are a ticking time bomb. Just remember you have many vehicles to choose from while looking for a car, so don’t ever feel committed to one vehicle. Salvage / Rebuilt / Rebuildable: A huge red flag. These events are caused when a car has been totaled or rebuilt from a totaled vehicle. These type of cars are often sold for cheap, but it’s definitely a buyer beware situation. You’ve been warned. Failed Emission Inspection: Another major warning sign, especially if recently added to the vehicle history. Vehicles that do not pass emission are not legally allowed on the road and can take thousands of dollars to fix up. If a car failed emissions then passed later, it is generally a safer bet. Water Damage / Storm Registration: These are specific insurance loss related events that deal with water damage to the car. This is an important distinction because water damage is a ticking time bomb, as it wreaks havoc on electrical systems. Where Does the Information Come From. Throughout the life of a vehicle, it can pass through multiple organizations that create a paper trail. These include the DMV, auto auctions, dealers, salvage auctions, junk yards, insurance companies, towing companies, police and other independent sources. By law, these organizations are all required to supply the vehicle information when a major event happens with the vehicle. Auto. Check also claims to have access to exclusive auction information that CARFAX does not, which is one reason why car auctions may prefer Auto. Check’s services. Sometimes, fresh information won’t show up on a vehicle history report either because it hasn’t been reported to the proper agency yet or updated in the history report. According to Edie, Auto. Check updates their databases every 4. Examples of Real Vehicle History Reports. Now that you’ve read this article, you should have an adequate understanding of what goes into a vehicle history report. For the truly serious buyer or the curious, we will follow- up by showing some actual vehicle reports from Auto. Check that we obtained during our How to Buy a Used Car for Under $1,0. In those reports, we’ll show you how to read each specific report and even read between the lines to understand a vehicle history report completely. We would like to thank Edie Hirtenstein at Auto. Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) chips such as those from the market leader Analog Devices have been around for longer. They are very different kinds of parts, even though they are both oscillators. Often that's fine, for example, if you want to drive a mixer with it: many mixers operate best when the VFO is a squarewave. If you want a sinewave, you'll need a lot of low pass filtering to get rid of the rich suite of harmonics. DDS chips have a sinewave output: it is generated by the rapid output of a succession of analogue voltages via a Digital- to- Analogue converter (DAC), which approximates a sinewave. Many of the DDS chips have an onboard comparator which can easily be used to turn the sinewave output into a squarewave, if that's what you need. Bear in mind though that you need an anti- alias low pass filter on the output of DDS chips to produce a clean output. Which one wins.. If you only need a squarewave, Si. DDS can do either (if it is one of the ones which has a comparator on board), so for that reason, my winner is DDS. Frequency range. A DDS will function right down to near DC. The practical upper range of a DDS is normally considered limited to 4. This is a limitation of the digital synthesis of the waveform, which is a sampled process (look up Nyquist). Outputs like this require more detailed design and the performance is unlikely to be as good. By contrast the Si. MHz to 9. 45. MHz, and a more limited selection of frequencies all the way up to 1. GHz. I have heard that operation below the specified 1. MHz lower limit is possible too but have not confirmed this myself. Here I'd say the DDS would win if you wanted to be able to go down to very low frequencies, but the Si. UHF and beyond. But because the Si. Frequency stability/accuracy. DDS requires a reference clock oscillator, which one normally provides with a high stability crystal oscillator. You have to provide the crystal reference oscillator. You can make it as accurate and stable as you like. GPS- lock it, lock it to a Rubidium standard, put it in a constant- temperature oven.. The difference here is that you have not much control over the internal oscillator of the Si. You can't adjust it to be exactly on frequency, you can't lock it to a frequency standard or GPS reference. In my Si. 57. 0- controlled QRSS beacon I found that the Si. A few Hz off frequency at 1. MHz and it did not seem to drift perceptibly with room temperature variations, though neither of these measurements were detailed. In my opinion, if you need stability and accuracy, DDS wins here, because you can make it as accurate and stable as you like. Frequency agility. The frequency of a DDS can be set almost instantly (at least, as fast as you can clock your new desired frequency into the chip)! Most DDS chips have at least 3. AD9. 91. 2) giving you tuning resolution down to steps of a few micro- Hz, if you should ever need it! Si. 57. 0's can also be tuned in very small steps but the frequency does not change instantly. When you make a change in frequency, there is a delay of up to 1. PLL locks on to the new frequency. That can sound like a small click/chirp in your receiver audio for example, if you are using the Si. VFO. The Si. 57. 0 can also be tuned much faster (1. In this case, the settling time is less than 0. This delayed tuning of the Si. Some also support a parallel programming interface (one byte at a time). I built a DDS generator which can be done without a micro- controller at all (see here) but normally you'd be using a microcontroller. The Si. 57. 0 has an I2. C interface, and programming the frequency you want is a little more tricky - involving some calculation of different multiplier/divider values and the internal digitally- controlled- oscillator frequency. A little more complex than the DDS programming word, which is a simple fraction of the reference clock frequency. The Si. 57. 0 is still not a problem if you're reasonably competent with programming microcontrollers, but as the DDS is more straightforward it has the lead here, I think. Performance: Spurs. The Si. 57. 0 is a digital phase locked loop oscillator producing a squarewave output. As all squarewaves, this is a fundamental plus a rich comb of odd harmonics. If a sinewave is required and the range of operation is narrow, the spurs can be filtered out if required, and are of course a reasonable distance from the carrier (i. There is some harmonic content on even harmonics too as the output is not guaranteed to be a perfect 5. Other spurious responses are very low for the Si. DDS chips have a bad reputation for spurs! This is because the output sine waveform is approximated by a series of discrete steps, which are later filtered external to the chip by your low pass filter. The process is inherently a discrete appoximation of the ideal sinewave, which generates spurious responses. The spurii are numerous and at various different amplitudes, and also can occur very close to the carrier, so you cannot filter them all away. Some of the most modern Analog DDS chips include a . These are effectively two parallel DDS cores, whose frequency and output amplitude and phase can be set up such that if your application can predict or measure the location of your spurs, you could choose your two most objectionable spurs, and eliminate them by cancelling them out. I think the range of instances that this would be useful would be somewhat limited. The datasheet mentions that this feature performs optimally slightly differently on each device, which would further limit its usefulness in many practical applications. The seriousness of the spurs problem depends mainly on two factors: the resolution of the DAC and the proportion of the output frequency relative to the reference oscillator frequency. DAC's typically go from 1. AD9. 91. 2. A higher resolution DAC produces less spurs. Similarly if the reference oscillator frequency is very high relative to the output frequency, spurs are reduced. The AD9. 91. 2 can operate with up to a 1. GHz reference oscillator. For output frequencies in the 0- 3. MHz HF range, the spurs are very minimal. For VHF or UHF output frequencies the spurs could be more objectionable for sure. For amateur radio use, even on a low- end DDS, spurs are unlikely to be a problem in purely transmit applications, because they are less than the legal spurious output limits of amateur radio equipment. In receive applications, spurs will show up as birdies in the receiver, and are more serious. However, for an HF receiver if you were using a modern DDS such as the AD9. GHz reference clock oscillator, then the spurious content would be very low and unlikely to be noticeable in most cases. A high- end DDS with careful design hasn't got spurious response problems under a limited range of circumstances i. But the Si. 57. 0 wins on this one because it doesn't have spurs problems anyway. Performance: Phase noise. Phase noise can be imagined as a widening of the theoretical perfect vertical line you would see on a spectrum analyser examining the output signal. One reason why it is important in a receiver, is that it mixes with strong signals some k. Hz away from your wanted signal to produce an elevated noise floor, which could easily obscure a weak signal you want to listen to. For a high performance receiver, it is really important to use a low phase noise local oscillator. The phase noise performance of DDS is generally very good. There is a little jitter added by the imperfections inherent in the digital waveform approximation and some general very limited phase noise added by the imperfections of this digital device. Also the DDS phase noise can only ever be as good (actually slightly worse) than the reference clock oscillator. Typically this would be a crystal- based crystal oscillator, and crystals, being very high Q devices, have very good phase noise performance. So generally, DDS is considered a low phase- noise technology. Many of the DDS chips include a reference clock multiplier PLL. This can be used to provide an internal very high frequency reference clock, up to the rating of the device e. GHz for the AD9. 91. Remember that high reference clocks are best, for best spur performance, so the multiplier can be useful in that regard. It can simplify your design greatly, but it comes at the price of adding unwanted phase noise in the internal PLL multiplication process. Frequency multiplication in any event carries a theoretical minimum 6d. B/octave (or 2. 0d. B/decade) phase noise penalty, but if you use the internal PLL multiplier you add even more than this. So for best phase noise performance, leave the PLL switched off and build your own external high frequency reference oscillator. The Si. 57. 0 is based on a PLL technology, which generally has a much higher phase noise. However in the Si. Donald Trump Suddenly Refuses to Talk About His False Wiretapping Claims. Donald Trump is still convinced that former president Barack Obama ordered wiretapping of Trump Tower last year, despite a congressional investigation and multiple intelligence agencies stating unequivocally there is no evidence of his claim. But that didn’t stop our Cheeto- in- Chief from reviving this old, tired fantasy during a television interview that aired this morning. This time around, however, Trump did not want to elaborate on what he believed. The President abruptly ended an interview with CBS reporter John Dickerson when pressed on his unsubstantiated claims that his Manhattan skyscraper was wiretapped ahead of the 2. And it’s a topic that should be number one, and we should find out what the hell is going on,” Trump answered. Dickerson pressed the president to explain his remarks again, and whether he stood by his unproven claims. Trump became visibly frustrated, and ended the interview. Thank you very much,”he said, before shooing Dickerson out of the room.
To recap, the absurd and unsubstantiated claim of wiretapping all started about two months ago, when Trump fired off a series of early morning tweets: Trump did not present any evidence of the supposed wiretapping, and also notably misspelled the word “tap.” It was a sad day for democracy, and also for anyone who has ever wanted a president who can spell. About a week later, senior counselor Kellyanne Conway tried to broaden Trump’s claims during an interview with Meet The Press when she said, “You can surveil someone through their phones, certainly through their television sets—any number of ways.” She later added that monitoring could be done with “microwaves that turn into cameras” and that “we know this is a fact of modern life.”That, of course, is bullshit, as were the initial claims themselves. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper outright denied them during his own interview with Meet The Press, one day after Trump’s false accusations. The Best Printers for Mac. So Many Options for Apple Users. A decade or so ago, few printers offered compatibility with Apple computers, but now we live in a happier age. Most new printers and all- in- one printers (AIOs) ship with OS X (and now, mac. OS Sierra) drivers, and many that don't provide them on disc allow you to download Mac drivers during the installation process. Mac- connected printers support most of the printing and AIO features you can access on a Windows machine. Nearly all printer manufacturers today provide support for Mac users. Thus, a list of the best models for Macs largely mirrors an overall list of the best printers out there. See How We Test Printers. One item worth mentioning is the Bonjour protocol, Apple's implementation of zero- configuration networking, which is built into mac. OS Sierra, all OS X versions going back to 1. OS (and can be installed on Windows, Linux, and BSD systems as well). Bonjour allows users to quickly discover devices, including printers, on their networks. Nearly all new network printers are Bonjour compatible, though very old routers may not support it. Who Needs a Mac- Friendly Printer? Macs are widely used by publishing professionals and graphic artists who rely on Adobe programs, such as Illustrator, to ensure the best output quality. Illustrator, as well as Photoshop and Acrobat, are optimized for Adobe's own Post. Script printing language. You can print graphical material with text made in these programs from non- Post. Script printers, but at a potential loss of quality, including occasional dropped elements and formatting. For any business that prints a lot of graphics, a printer with a Post. Script driver (or at least Post. Script emulation) is a big plus. Post. Script has been a staple of the graphic arts since its inclusion with the Apple Laser. Writer printer launched the desktop publishing revolution in the mid- 1. Many specialty printers are Windows- only. Pads now commonplace in many homes and offices, there are several solutions to print from your tablet. The one most users will rely on is Apple's own Air. Print utility. This allows a Wi- Fi- connected i. Pad to communicate with a compatible printer on the same network. If your printer doesn't support Air. Print, there are several third- party utilities, including Printopia and Presto, you can download to your desktop. These effectively make your printer Air. Print compatible. Another alternative is to use a printing app, such as Samsung Mobile Print or Epson i. Print. When using these apps, your i. Pad and printer will need to be on the same network. Other solutions include cloud printing (sending your documents to a cloud server which then sends them to your printer) and email printing, which assigns an email address to your printer which you in turn use to print from your i. Pad by sending an email to your printer. Which Mac Printer Is Right For You? Below are our top- rated Mac- friendly printer picks. This roundup includes a generous selection of Post. Script printers, as well as some non- Post. Script models capable of high- quality graphics and/or photo output. But because many Mac users use their computers for tasks unrelated to graphic arts, we also present some top- notch general- purpose printers here. By and large, the qualities that make a Mac- compatible printer great are the same things that let any printer stand out from the crowd: a winning combination of features, speed, and print quality at a competitive price. Also from the Italian label has surfaced the very first advance from the new mega- band including guitarist Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Free Fall), vocalist Ronnie Romero (Lords Of Black, Rainbow, drummer Mike Terrana (Axel Rudi Pell, Yngwie): THE FERRYMEN, bein 'Still Standing Up' the second single. But what really surprised me from Frontiers Music are the new, two awesome bands just signed by the label. One of them is RADIATION ROMEOS formed by the amazing singer Parramore Mc. Carty (best known for being the frontman of such legendary US metal acts Warrior) and famed Billy Idol / Vince Neil guitarist Steve Stevens' solo project, Atomic Playboys (in fact, the inspiration for the name Radiation Romeos came from a line in the song “Atomic Playboys. I've been waiting for years for a new Steve Stevens' band, and this looks terrific. The first single 'Ocean Drive' has the best melody / razor guitar work heard in months. And the other band signed by Frontiers is called THE NIGHT, which debut album is scheduled for August but the first single 'Welcome To The Show' already surfaced (not for sale yet). This combo from Finland is formed by Sami Hyde (vocals) who was part of the Tony Mills Band and wrote many songs for 'The Magnificent' album, and guitarist Ilkka Wirtanen, producer of international acts like Reckless Love, Baton Rogue Morgue, and more. Yeah, the AOR waves of this first single will keep you hooked until August.. We have another cut from TONY MILLS (Shy, Serpentine, TNT) next solo album, featuring an impressive line- up including Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake), Tommy Denander, Tom Martin (Vega), Eric Ragno and many more, produced by Pete Newdeck (Tainted Nation, Blood Red Saints) and mastered by Harry Hess (Harem Scarem). The band describe themselves as a mix of '8. Glam Metal / Hair Metal / Pop Metal / Hard Rock with a modern sound. Amazing stuff. And then you have a track - the highly melodic 'One Man' - from BUGZY, a band that existed in the '8. Now 2. 01. 7 all original Bugzy's recordings have been compiled into 1 CD to be released soon. This is pure '8. 0 radio ready melodic stuff, very well recorded and performed. A must for collectors and fans of Eighties Melodic Rock. This is killer Advanced Releases compilation IMHO. There are plenty of teaching textbooks meant to provide instructional strategies for teachers. This site strives to be more. Students give three things they believe they already know about a subject, two things they would like to learn more about, and finally, one question that is related to the overall concept you will be learning about. Students working at similar levels are grouped together for instruction. Achievement motivation focuses on our desire to reach new levels of achievement or goals. This has implications for educators looking for ways to inspire less than enthusiastic students. Read more on education. Acronyms for Memorizing Students sometimes have an easier time remembering facts when they create their own memorable acronym. These approaches engage students and help them to anchor the new things they are learning to what they already know. Many of these will be mentioned in this list of pedagogical strategies. Some examples include KWL charts, think- pair- write, cloze activities, and quick writes. Students actively engage in problem solving, writing, or other activities. This approach encourages evaluation, synthesis and analysis instead of just searching a book for the “right” answer. Active Participation Get the students involved in their learning. Give them small projects. Have them do surveys, talk to each other and share. Start a real class discussion. If you have shy kids, let them write down some comments to initiate discussion. Stop talking and discuss what was just taught for a few minutes. Brainstorm ideas about the topic of the day. Seriously, how many details do you remember from your last three in- service meetings? Sometimes one of the best teaching techniques is to let the students take the lead and then adapt you teaching methods and strategies to fit the moment. I always thought they would be a major hassle when my school started moving toward a differentiated approach to learning, but once these are set up, the students quickly catch on to the concept of moving from station to station. If you have a co- teacher or aide available, these are even easier to manage. Symptoms include impulsivity, being inattentive, and hyperactivity. These can show up in various combinations. Learn more at healthline. Advance Organizers These are “frameworks” for learning. Actually, they just give the class a heads up as to what they’ll be learning that day. You basically introduce the topic and tie it to prior lessons and knowledge. I always write the day’s objective on the board and refer to it within the first few minutes of class. It also gives learners something to aim for during the lesson. That is, they know what they should be learning in the next 4. Disadvantages A simple class exercise where two columns are used to compare the advantages and disadvantages of a given topic. AGO (Aims, Goals, and Objectives) In this strategy by Edward de Bono, the “notion of purpose broadens the perception of a situation. The AGO is a device to get students to focus directly and deliberately on the intention behind actions.” Read more. You hook your students’ interest, focus their attention, and get them engaged in the lesson. This could be a lot of things. Some people like to start with “bell ringers” or questions related to the previous lesson. It could also be something as simple as taking a minute to choose a homework question the would feel comfortable answering. A student shares his written work with the class. Obviously, this should be done toward the end of the writing process after the author has already cleaned up his or her rough draft. Feedback should be primarily positive, but constructive criticism is a good thing here. I’ve found that the other students often ask questions that can help the author to recognize details they might have left out of their work up to that point. Student learning occurs both in and out of the classroom and involves writing, reading, viewing, speaking, and listening. It is a model that integrates writing and reading for students and it involves both direct and indirect teaching methods. A variety of instructional methods for teaching reading comprehension, phonics, and writing skills may be applied. We’ve got some behavior management tips for you. Benchmark Testing This type of testing is done to determine where a student is starting out and how much progress has been made over a designated period of time. This is a method of monitoring student progress. To maintain consistency, standardized benchmark tests are often used. The time between tests may vary, but every three to six weeks is usually considered acceptable. The goal of benchmark test taking is to see how much academic progress is being made as the school year goes along. Apple is pretty great about honoring its warranties and even recently changed its policy on fourth generation iPads to allow for an upgrade if something’s wrong. It is a way to encourage students to get more involved with reading. Students make a book recommendation to their peers in an organized way that includes a bit of personal reflection on what they enjoyed about the book. These fit well when introducing a book fair or even a newly acquired classroom book. Students are given a topic to focus on and then are encouraged to use their creativity as well as prior knowledge to create a list of ideas that can then be used as a starting point for new learning. Brainstorming should be done in an environment that encourages open sharing and discourages judging and criticism. It encourages abstract thinking, so it is best suited to students who have reached that level of cognitive development. This is generally after elementary school age, but you can adapt this to your elementary classroom if the students seem to have a solid understanding and interest in the topic being discussed. Teachers can facilitate this process by first suggesting appropriate categories to get the ball rolling. This is a good way to encourage students to examine how things a alike and different. This obviously can lead later to compare and contrast exercises. The emphasis is on cause and effect relationships. I usually go for the fastest method that is appropriate. One thing I have definitely learned though, is that you can’t expect most kids to voluntarily raise their hands and announce that they need a deeper explanation. If you don’t check for understanding, you risk having a classroom of lost and disinterested learners as you continue teaching. This usually ends badly with frustrated students and low test scores. The time spent checking for understanding pays off later because even if students do get “lost”, you don’t have to backtrack nearly as far to get everyone back up to speed. The theory here is that getting students to respond frequently during a lesson will keep them more involved and lead to more students actually remembering and understanding what has been taught. Chunking This is the process of grouping or organizing bits of information into groups that are easier to remember together. The class was always very responsive, and at the time, we just assumed that he was giving us a day off. Looking back now, I see that these discussions were expertly guided toward the teacher’s chosen topic of the day. He was pretty good at what he did! Conversations in the classroom can be a great way to get more people involved and to gauge how much everyone understands. Depending on the class and the topic, teachers an decide how much guidance is needed as the lesson begins and progresses. Secondary teachers may want to consider them for this purpose. You have to take time out of your already overloaded schedule to teach students simple procedures. In the long run though, having routines in place can be a great time saver. Classroom routines can be established for everything from sharpening pencils and turning in homework to knowing how the class should operate in the event that an unprepared substitute shows up. Don’t underestimate the power here. Establishing good routines can be as important as having solid lesson plans. Routines should be a part of your overall classroom management plan. Classroom Rules. Cloze Procedure A cloze procedure is used to check for understanding of context in a reading task. The student is expected to replace missing words with appropriate vocabulary in a given passage using context clues and their own understanding of the subject they have been reading about. Clustering This is a method used for organizing information when preparing to write. Unlike most linear methods of organization, this is based more on mapping what you are going to write about. It is sometimes compared to brainstorming, but it is a more organized approach. It helps students to focus on what comes to mind when they choose one particular topic to write about. Cognitive Strategy Instruction. Cold Call This is an instructional strategy that is dreaded by students who tend to drift off and daydream during class. The teacher calls on students during the course of the lesson and subsequent discussion without really considering who is volunteering to answer. That means that even students who don’t have their hands raised might get called on at any time. This isn’t meant to be used as a tool for “catching” people who are not paying attention. Rather, you would hope that students in a class where cold calls are used would enter the room ready to pay attention and contribute. When used correctly, this approach can solicit input from students who otherwise would probably not have offered their valuable insights on the lesson of the day. Collaborative Learning In collaborative learning, students work with each other to discuss a given “problem” and come up with possible solutions. This can be done in pairs or in small groups. Advantages include students taking more ownership for their learning, improved social interactions, and built in peer tutoring opportunities. Common Core. Compare and Contrast In my own experience, this method is used quite a bit in reading and language arts instruction. Download - Update. Star - Update. Star. Also known as the Sea of Trees, Suicide Forest, and Japan's Demon Forest, Aokigahara has been home to over 5. The story ends with two lovers committing suicide in the forest, so many people believe that's what started it all. However, the history of suicide in Aokigahara predates the novel, and the place has long been associated with death. Hundreds upon hundreds of Japanese people have hanged themselves from the trees of the suicide forest. Wataru Tsurumui's controversial 1. Please enter an email address. The Complete Suicide Manual, is a book that describes various modes of suicide and even recommends Aokigahara as the perfect place to die. Apparently this book is also a common find in the forest, usually not too far away from a suicide victim and their belongings. Undoubtedly, the most common method of suicide in the forest is hanging. Japan's suicide rate is already bad enough as it is, and having this forest and suicide manual on top of it all is pretty terrible. Despite many efforts to prevent suicide and provide help to those considering it, Japan's suicide rate continues to rise. WHO publications page with links to the library, bookshop and flagship publications. Legend has it that in ancient times families would abandon people in the forest during periods of famine when there was not enough food to go around. By sacrificing family members to the forest, there would be less mouths to feed and therefore enough food for the rest of the family. Those abandoned in the forest would die long, horrible, drawn out deaths due to starvation. Because of that, Aokigahara is also said to be haunted by the souls of these abandoned people. In addition, there are many other ghost and demon stories associated with the forest. It is said that these ghastly spirits glide between the trees with their white, shifting forms being occasionally spotted by unsuspecting visitors out of the corners of their eyes. Japanese spiritualists believe that the suicides committed in the forest have permeated Aokigahara's soil and trees, generating paranormal activity and preventing many who enter from escaping the gnarled depths of the forest. The Suicide Forest is not the kind of place you'd want to honeymoon at, that's for sure. Terrifying Topography Source: Away From Normal. The vast forest covers a 3,5. Aokigahara is so thick that even at high noon it's entirely possible to find places shrouded in complete darkness. It's also mostly devoid of animals and is eerily quiet. Hearing a bird chirping in the forest is incredibly rare. The area is rocky, cold, and littered with over 2. The discomforting forest is known for the thickness of its trees, its twisting network of woody vines, and the dangerous unevenness of the forest floor. All of this together gives the place a very unwelcoming feeling. Personally, I love hiking and I think the forest actually looks really pretty during the daytime. However, I think the place would turn absolutely horrifying come nightfall. Who knows when you'll trip over some snarled root or jagged rock, fall down a hill and land on top of a pile of bones or a rotting corpse. No nighttime hiking in Aokigahara for me, thanks. Further compounding the creepiness factor is the common occurrence of compasses, cell phones, and GPS systems being rendered useless by the rich deposits of magnetic iron in the area's volcanic soil. I'm sure this fact has helped propagate the legend of the forest's demonic habit of trapping visitors within it. Source: Studio 3. Besides bodies and homemade nooses, also scattered around the forest are signs put up by the police with messages like . Judging from the increasing number of suicides, these signs probably aren't all that effective. An Unfortunate Suicide Hotspot Source: Daysleeper. By the 1. 97. 0s the suicides had become so infamous that the Japanese government started to do annual sweeps of the forest to search for and clear out the bodies. In 2. 00. 2, 7. 8 bodies were found within the forest, exceeding the previous record of 7. By 2. 00. 3, the rate had climbed to 1. In recent years, the local government has stopped publicizing the numbers in an attempt to downplay Aokigahara's association with suicide. In 2. 00. 4, 1. 08 people killed themselves in the forest and in 2. But that's just the number they found and reported. Who knows how many more there are that just go undiscovered? I'm actually pretty surprised that I hadn't heard about the Suicide Forest until just recently. You'd think that something like this, being the number two hotspot for suicides in the world, and located right at the base of Mt. Fuji, would be more well known. Maybe it's just me. Its Effect on the Locals Source: DJStorm. Nearly as unfortunate as the suicides themselves is the impact the suicides have on the locals and forest workers. There's nothing beautiful about dying in there. The workers are tasked with the job of carrying the bodies down from the forest to the local station, where the bodies are put in a special room used specifically to house suicide corpses. The forest workers then play janken to see who has to sleep in the room with the corpse. Talk about terrible. The reason for these strange sleeping arrangements is that it is believed if the corpse is left alone, it's very bad luck for the ghost of the suicide victim. Their spirits are said to scream throughout the night if left alone, and their bodies will get up and shuffle around, searching for company. I don't know about you, but this sounds like one of the absolute worst ways to spend a night. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if the body is just like a pile of bones, but I can't imagine how creepy it would be to sleep in a dinky little room with a fresh corpse as a roommate. To make matters worse, a few years back people started to scavenge the forest for valuables. And by this I mean that people would search the forest for dead bodies and then loot their corpses. Talk about disrespectful, not to mention creepy. Aokigahara Documentary. I also found this awesome video from Vice about one of the guys who regularly goes on suicide prevention patrols in Aokigahara. It's really interesting and definitely worth a watch if you have twenty minutes to spare. Like I said before, the suicide rate of Japan is one of the highest in the world and really shows no sign of decreasing despite government measures to discourage it. That being said, I don't really see Aokigahara becoming less of a suicide hotspot anytime soon. Destination Truth. Aokigahara was also featured on an episode of Sy. Fy's Destination Truth series because of how famous the place is for being haunted. Unfortunately, the episode itself is nothing special. It's pretty much just what you'd expect from a paranormal investigation show. Americans getting lost in the woods at night, seeing things in the shadows, and hearing whispers in the night. The best part about the episode is seeing what the place looks like at nighttime, and how easy it is to get lost there. So, what are your thoughts on the Suicide Forest, undoubtedly one of the creepiest places in Japan? Would you want to visit and explore the forest, or would it be too scary? Would you be willing to camp overnight in the forest if someone dared you? Have you even heard of this place before? Let us know on Twitter! The Asahi Shimbun.
